Beyond the busy village of Gatehouse of Fleet lies Kirkcudbright, a small and charming fishing town, popularised by artists, including the famous ‘Glasgow Boys’ it is now known as ‘The Artists Town’ and is full of galleries, craft shops, modern cafes and restaurants, huddled around the still active harbour, all framed by the ruined medieval MacLellan’s castle. Aside from stoking up on art here, there is also a sizable supermarket, and excellent bakers and butchers.
